Skinny jeans
Skinny
jeans are a type of pants that are suitable for narrow legs and short leg
openings. For this style, other names are drainpipes, stovepipes, tight pants,
pencil pants, skinny pants, gas pipes, cigarette pants, skinny jeans, and
skinnies. These jeans are completely tapered under the feet, whereas drainpipe
jeans are skinny but the bottom is straight instead of tapering and so they are
often slightly baggy under the feet than skinny jeans. In some styles, zippers
are needed under the feet to facilitate pulling on the feet. Stretch denim can
be used anywhere on the 2% to 4% spandex, allowing jeans to have a super-slim
fit. Skinny jeans have come in a diversity of colors and styles.
Skinny jeans for women with a history
From
the sixteenth to the 19th century, the Mughal aristocracy engaged in
tight-fitting Churidars, which were tied below the knee. The idea originally
came for women’s clothing that they wore for fashion. These trousers and other
elements of traditional clothing, such as shalwar kameez, were often worn by
Englishmen working in India, especially by officials of East India Trading
Company.
Tight-fitting
trousers were fashionable during the French Revolution from 1855 to 1850, when
they were worn as a political statement of Sans-Culottes. These pantaloons,
popular with Regency-era Englishmen like Beau Brummel, were high above the
waist and were designed to stretch the legs like fashionable breeches in the
upper class. Pantaloons were tied around the ankles and were usually worn over
boots.
Skin-tight
acid-washed jeans were popular in the 1980s with most heavy metal bands and especially
in the thrash metal scene like Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer. This
was the trend for those who did not get spandex, which was popular in the
dominant heavy metallic scene of the time. These were often after white
high-top sneakers or basketball shoes like Converse. In the late 1980s,
drainpipe pants were largely surpassed by strain-leg jeans like the Levi 501s
but were popular with hard rock fans until the 1990s. Also, tight-fitting jeans
were worn by pop stars like Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury.
The
early and mid-2000s saw the continued decline of slim-fitting pants and jeans
in mainstream fashion. However, in 2005, fit pants were reintroduced into the
mainstream market for women. These new styles of pants were called skinny jeans. Within
the first year, skinny jeans were only sold online, and they were not available
in stores and it was mainly worn by women. Initially, there were some early
recipients but the public did not receive them well. It wasn’t until 2006 that
skinny jeans gained more steam in the fashion world and during this time skinny
jeans were sold in shopping malls. Throughout 2007, skinny jeans received
mainstream exposure as fashion trends began to shift away from bell bottles and
baggy pants, which had been influential for the past 10 years. Men's skinny
jeans were introduced in 2006 and by 2009 they had become the norm.
Skinny
jeans first appeared in men's fashion in 2008. It continues into the 2010s,
which have become popular since they entered mainstream fashion in 2011, and
have finally become one of the defining fashion pieces of the decade for both
men and women. They have become so popular that many men have expanded their
outfits to include tight-fitting chino trousers that come in a variety of
colors but often khaki, brown, or white.
