Properties of viscose rayon


i. One of the critical advantages of viscose rayon is its softness and smooth texture. The production process involves chemically treating cellulose with caustic soda to create a solution known as "viscous xanthate," which is then aged, filtered, reconverted into cellulose through another chemical process called "regeneration," and finally spun into fibers. This unique manufacturing method gives rise to fibers with excellent draping qualities and a luxurious feel against the skin.


ii. Another notable feature of viscose rayon is its high absorbency capacity. Due to its porous nature, it can quickly absorb moisture while still retaining breathability. This property makes it ideal for manufacturing clothing items such as summer dresses, blouses, t-shirts, and undergarments where comfort during warm weather conditions is highly valued.


iii. Furthermore, viscose rayon possesses excellent dyeing properties. This artificial fabric is derived from natural sources, specifically cellulose from wood pulp or cotton linter. It undergoes a complex chemical transformation process to produce the final product known as viscose rayon.


The production of viscose rayon begins with the extraction of cellulose fibers from wood pulp or cotton linter through various mechanical and chemical processes. Wood pulp is commonly sourced from pine, spruce, or eucalyptus, while cotton linters are short cotton fibers remaining on cottonseed after ginning.


Once the cellulose fibers have been obtained, they are treated with chemicals to remove impurities and break them into soluble forms. The most common method used for dissolving cellulose is called the viscose process. The cellulose is combined with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) to convert it into alkali cellulose.


Next, carbon disulfide—a highly flammable liquid—is added to create a solution known as yellow viscous xanthate. This solution undergoes further processing by introducing it into more alkaline conditions using sodium hydroxide. This step results in the formation of a substance called sodium cellulose xanthate.


The resulting sodium cellulose xanthate solution goes through aging tanks for several hours until its viscosity increases significantly, giving rise to its name "viscous" rayon. During aging, oxygen in the air oxidizes any residual traces of carbon disulfide in the solution.


Following aging, the thickened mixture passes through spinnerets—small holes designed for extrusion—which convert it into long filaments resembling silk strands when solidified by coagulation baths containing sulfuric acid or zinc sulfate solutions at low temperatures.


This solidification process allows individual filaments to form a continuous thread. The thread is then washed to remove any remaining impurities and neutralize the acidity of the coagulation bath. Afterward, it undergoes stretching to align the fibers and improve strength.


Once stretched, the viscose rayon fiber can be spun into yarns for subsequent weaving or knitting into fabrics. It is important to note that various finishing treatments may be applied at different stages of production to enhance the fabric's properties, such as softness, drape, or wrinkle resistance.


Limitation of viscose rayon


Like any other textile material, viscose rayon has its drawbacks. One of its primary concerns is its tendency to wrinkle easily. Garments made from pure viscose rayon may require ironing or steaming to maintain a crisp appearance. Additionally, care must be taken when washing viscose rayon as it can lose strength and shrink if subjected to excessive heat or vigorous agitation.


Furthermore, although derived from a natural source, the production process of viscose rayon involves using various chemicals and solvents that raise environmental concerns. The disposal of these substances may contribute to pollution if not managed properly. However, efforts have been made in recent years toward more sustainable manufacturing practices by utilizing closed-loop systems that recycle and minimize waste.
