Sustainable Denim Washing
Sustainable
denim washing is a modern trend of wash. Eco-friendly this type of wash save at
a time- water, energy, time, and chemical. In modern times these are more
valuable for the textile industry.
Sustainability
Sustainability
is an approach that considers the interconnected environmental, social, and
economic dimensions of systems and processes towards a harmonious and peaceful
future. Sustainability is no more a show-able, but a practice to be cultivated.
How does one use natural resources without impacting ecological, economic, and
social balance? Our site has been trying in various ways to maintain an
equilibrium, by minimizing the exploitation of natural resources and reducing
the impact on the environment and all this while maintaining a socio-economic
sanctity. Sustainability is an initiative towards showcasing these efforts and
spreading awareness about the innovative ways that organizations are grappling
with sustainability.
What is a Sustainable
wash? Sustainable means
use less time, less energy, and less water, give more Eco-friendly and more
production. When this process is used in the wash then it is called sustainable
wash.
Objectives
or the main vision of sustainable wash is below -
1.
Saving time
2.
Saving energy
3.
Saving water
1. Saving time
The
main goal is to save time in everything or every production factory. Production
depends on time and other materials, mainly time is more valuable. The time
value is much higher in the manufacturing industry. Every minute is calculated
for production, because of how much product can be produced in less time. This
is basically the goal of the company owners. That's why they use different
methods to get more production in less time.
2. Saving Energy
Energy
or power is another valuable thing in the production factory. More energy use
creates more costing in the product. Production cost is high, income is less.
So energy-saving is a big factor in the production factory. If you create a
high-priced product and more quantity in less energy consumption, the factory
will be more profited or benefited. Challenging market you survive more time
due to less prices. At present labor and power cost is high, so every factory
owners want to be more productive and use less energy or labor cost.
3. Saving Water
Water
is essential for every living thing. Water is needed all the time for farming,
sustaining life, and production factory. Water is collected mainly from rivers,
canals, and underground layers. When we use more water, the ecological balance
will no longer be right. There will be environmental disasters, landslides, and water scarcity. At this point, the earth will lose its beauty, and the animals will
lose their habitat. So water use needs to be affordable. To this end, the
current slogan in laundry factories is Sustainable Wash. New methods of denim
dyeing, finishing, and processing are now available and sustainable solutions
are available that benefit the manufacturer, and the customer.
The sustainable denim washing process
As
changes in the supply chain need to continue, both brands and consumers are
looking for more sustainable alternatives regardless of the significance and
feel that consumers prefer their favorite pair of jeans. It is possible to
achieve the same designs and overall look of denim while saving water, energy,
time, and/or chemicals throughout the process.
A. For stone effect
Pumice
Stones are used for stone-washing denim to give a faded, worn-out look to the
fabric. Need large washing machines, higher labor costs involved with a pumice
stone, need extra labor for removing the residue, dust, and sludge. Here denim
fabric tearing possibility is high.
Instead
of this, new technology Tonello created abrasive stainless-steel drums in
collaboration with Levi Strauss & Co. These are fast, removable, and can be
used for normal washing/ dyeing processes. The NoStone process reduces water
consumption, production costs, emissions, waste, processing time, and manual
labor.

B. For the wash-down
effect
In
the traditional method, Bleaching is a step in denim finishing that is used to
decolorize indigo. The level of discoloration depends on the amount of bleach
used, the temperature, and the duration of the wash process. It can cause
corrosion to machines, weaken the fabric, and high exposure can be harmful to
workers.
Instead
of this, new technology ozone used as a powerful bleaching agent that is
generated from oxygen. It works quickly and requires fewer rinses and the
remaining ozone is converted back into oxygen and water. Enzymes (Laccases) can
be used as an alternative to the bleaching process which changed only the dye
and appearance of the fabric without changing fabric quality, strength, and
elasticity.

C. For whiskers effect
In
the traditional methods, where used sandpaper and manual pattern board for
making whiskers. This operation is done by a manual operator. In the new
technology, laser machines can create vintage effects, whiskers, patterns,
patches, and even intentional holes and tears in a garment. The laser
technology uses less water, chemicals, and energy to create a wide variety of
denim looks.
D. For sanding effect
In
traditional methods, manual sanding is used to create faded areas by physically
scraping the surface of denim garments with a variety of tools. Sandblasting
uses compressed air to forcefully spray sand at the garments. Sandblasting is
extremely hazardous to workers, which has led many organizations to ban the
technique.
In
the new technology, Laser can also, be used to mimic hand sanding and
sandblasting. The laser can be pre-programmed with patterns that can mimic
exactly the desired look achieved through manual sanding and sandblasting with
significantly less labor and physical hazards.
