‘Ask forgiveness to your Lord. He is very forgiving. He will send down on you abundant rain. You will increase your wealth and children. He will establish your gardens and will make rivers flow for you. '(Surah Nooh: verses 10-12)

It is narrated on the authority of Hasan Basri (R) that if anyone came to him and complained of drought, he would teach him to apologize. When another person complained to him about poverty, he told him about this (apology). When another complained that his garden had dried up, He also asked him to apologize. One man said that he did not have children, so he asked him to apologize. When someone asked him, why did he tell everyone to just apologize? Then he recited this verse and said, "I did not say this on my own behalf, but Allah Almighty has given this prescription in all the matters mentioned." (Aisarut Tafasir)

Repentance meaning in Islam

Repentance is the Islamic concept of repenting to Allah for any sin or misdeed. This is a direct matter between a person and Allah, so there is no recommendation. There is no original sin in Islam. Forsaking what God has forbidden and returning to what He has commanded. The term refers to repentance for one's misdeeds, atonement for those misdeeds, and determination to forsake those misdeeds (repentance, resolution, and remorse). If someone sins against another person, he needs compensation.

Condition of repentance

According to Islamic Sharia, when an act of repentance is performed by a Muslim, Allah generally accepts it. However, that repentance should be sincere and true. Islamic scholars agree that if a person is not ashamed of his past misdeeds, or does not wish to forsake them, then the verbal declaration of his repentance is a public mockery of repentance. Mere verbal repentance is not liable for actual repentance. There are some criteria for sincere repentance.

Ali (RA) was asked what repentance is, and he replied that repentance consists of six elements:

i. To regret one's past evil deeds;

ii. To carry out Divine duties (fard, wajib, etc.) that were missed;

iii. To return the rights/properties of others that were usurped unjustly;

iv. To ask forgiveness of a person who has been wronged by him, physically or verbally;

v. To make a firm resolve of avoiding sin in the future; and

vi. To employ oneself in Allah's obedience, as he previously employed himself in Allah's disobedience.
